BOOK AN NSW ORDER 43 COAL MINE WORKERS MEDICAL
Coal Services Health Monitoring Requirements for Coal Mine Workers Order No. 43 (Order 43) builds on the processes and systems that were established under Order 41 to protect the health and safety of workers in the New South Wales coal industry.
Order 43 officially replaced Order 41, and any associated schedules, on the 1st of July 2018.
For the purposes of NSW Order 43 Coal Mine Workers Medical the following definitions are applicable:
- A coal mine worker means a person who carries out work at a coal mine for a person conducting a business or undertaking. It does not include a person who works in an environment in which they are not exposed to coal dust, unless the person has previously worked in an area of a coal mine in which they were exposed to coal dust.
- A worker means a person who is about to commence work at a coal mine for a person conducting a business or undertaking, including a person who has previously worked at a coal mine and is about to commence work at a different coal mine.
MEDICAL ASSESSMENT
Jobfit has approved and appropriately qualified medical practitioners and registered nurses to perform NSW Order 43 Coal Mine Workers medical assessments. Once approved, the Order 43 medical can be released to the requestor.

Most important, the employer requesting an Order 43 medical must download and complete the Coal Services Role Requirements form. Furthermore, the completed form must be uploaded at the time of submitting the booking request.

PRE-PLACEMENT ORDER 43 MEDICAL
A Pre-Placement Order 43 Medical Assessment should be completed where the worker/candidate has moved to a new company within the NSW Coal Industry. This can be treated like a pre-employment medical for the NSW coal mine site.
A pre-placement Order 43 medical includes:
- Medical History Questionnaire
- Respiratory Questionnaire
- Chest X-ray
- Spirometry Test
- Cardiovascular System Examination
- Musculoskeletal System Examination
- Hearing Test
- Vision Test
- Auditory Canal Examination
- Abdomen Examination
- Skin Examination
- Urinalysis
- Respirator Fit Test
PERIODIC ORDER 43 MEDICAL
If the worker has previously completed an Order 41 or Order 43 previously, for the same company in the same term of employment, they should complete a Periodic Order 43 Medical Assessment.
Every coal worker must undertake a Periodic Order 43 Medical Assessment:
- Every 3 years from the workers Pre-Placement Medical Assessment, or not more than 3 years from when they commenced work (whichever is earlier); and
- Not more than every 3 years after that.
A periodic Order 43 medical includes:
- Medical History Questionnaire
- Respiratory Questionnaire
- Chest X-ray
- Spirometry Test
- Cardiovascular System Examination
- Musculoskeletal System Examination
- Hearing Test
- Vision Test
- Auditory Canal Examination
- Abdomen Examination
- Skin Examination
- Urinalysis
- Respirator Fit Test
- Pathology (non-fasting cholesterol and glucose testing)
Order 43 Exit Medical
Employers must ensure that an exit medical assessment is offered to each worker who is retiring or otherwise ceasing work. This is to ensure that any conditions that may impact on the worker’s health in retirement are identified, and an appropriate course of action is implemented.
The exit medical assessment is comprised of the components for a periodic medical assessment, except for respiratory fit testing as follows:
- Medical History Questionnaire
- Respiratory Questionnaire
- Chest X-ray
- Spirometry Test
- Cardiovascular System Examination
- Musculoskeletal System Examination
- Hearing Test
- Vision Test
- Auditory Canal Examination
- Abdomen Examination
- Skin Examination
