Congratulations to Jobfit’s award winning Medical Director

13 December 2023 | News

We’re proud to announce that Jobfit’s Medical Director (Onsite Services) Dr Jessica Johnson has won the prestigious 2022 AFOEM Deane Southgate Award for her academic achievements in the area of occupational medicine.

Deane Southgate was one of the pioneers of occupational medicine in Australia. The award is named in his honour and is presented to the trainee who achieves the highest average percentage in the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) written and practical exams.

Dr Johnson says winning the Deane Southgate Award is an honour. She also feels it is important to recognise and promote occupational medicine as a specialist area of healthcare.

“Work is a significant and important part of our lives,“ Dr Johnson said.

“It is known that being employed in good, safe, and healthy workplaces is beneficial to health and wellbeing. Occupational medicine is the specialty that encompasses all aspects of how work can affect a person’s health, as well as how a person’s health needs to be managed in relation to work.”

Dr Johnson is an occupational and environmental medicine registrar with AFOEM – a faculty of RACP. The training leads to fellowship of AFOEM together with the qualification of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Physician.

“Occupational physicians have the medical knowledge as well as the experience and understanding of workplaces and industrial processes. This is needed to effectively manage a person’s health in the context of their work,” Dr Johnson said.

Dr Johnson says the award comes at the culmination of a lot of hard work.

“It’s welcome recognition for the effort it takes in order to pass the written and clinical examinations on the first try,” she said.

“I hadn’t aimed to win prizes but it is nice to be recognised!”

Congratulations to Jobfit’s award winning Dr Jessica Johnson from everyone at Jobfit and Baseline Onsite.
