Pre-employment medicals help to manage these risks in the workplace with the aim of avoiding illness or injury to the applicant or fellow employee.
Good employers take their duty of care towards their workforce seriously. This includes understanding what risks prospective and existing employees might have.
Some jobs also have legal requirements and standards that need to be met. For example, the national standards for Commercial and Heavy Vehicle driving, Passenger Vehicle Driver Medicals, Rail Safety Workers medical, Queensland Coal Board medical, NSW Coal Order 43 to name just a few.
Jobfit is one of Australia’s leading occupational health partners to industry. What’s more, we conduct pre-employment medical examinations, pre-placement medicals and periodic medical assessments to all Australian state and territory WorkSafe requirements.
What to expect
Each pre-employment medical will involve a number of varying aspects. These will depend on the job you are applying (or employed) for, and the organisation in question. You will be required to firstly complete a health assessment questionnaire. Subsequently, you will undergo a medical examination by one of our qualified healthcare professionals.
Your medical examination will be comprehensive. From your blood pressure to your vision, heart, abdomen, limbs and spine. You will also have your urine checked for sugar and blood. You may be required to remove your outer garments. Therefore, please wear appropriate underwear to your medical assessment.
For physically demanding jobs in remote and hot environments, you might be required to undertake a work fitness assessment (otherwise known as a functional capacity assessment or musculoskeletal assessment). Therefore, appropriate loose fitting clothing and closed in shoes (preferably runners) should be worn.
