Variety, support, and work-life balance — why I love occupational nursing at Jobfit

16 June 2023 | News

April started as an occupational nurse with Jobfit two and a half years ago, and is now the State Clinical Lead for Victoria. With eight years of hospital-based nursing behind her, April has enjoyed the change of pace and greater work-life balance that she’s experienced at Jobfit.

As Victorian State Clinical Lead, April’s role comprises many different responsibilities, and its this diversification that she loves.

“Alongside my role as an occupational health nurse — conducting medicals, functional assessments, lung function testing and drug and alcohol testing — I’m responsible for contributing to the clinical governance and the education and training of the Victorian team. A bit of a mixed bag, I suppose!” April said.

For April, the best part about working at Jobfit is the variety, flexibility, and professional support.

“One day, I might be training new staff that are coming on, the next I might be working in clinic running a standard appointment list, but the day after that I might be working onsite such as travelling to rural Victoria and conducting medicals for a large manufacturer. April said.

“If you’re someone who likes varied work, you’ve got the option to work in different clinics as well as onsite, and completing varying projects such as vaccination clinics— so, a real variety of things. It’s a nice change from more critical care nursing work.”

Coming from working within a large public hospital in Victoria, April has enjoyed the support and internal training that Jobfit has provided to expand her skillset.

“Anything that someone is not qualified in, or that Jobfit wants them to be qualified in — vaccines, spirometry, drug and alcohol accreditation — is completely paid for by Jobfit. There are so many different areas that you can work in as a nurse, so being able to upskill in occupational health and have that education provided is awesome!”

So, being new to occupational health shouldn’t be a deterrent for nurses looking for a change, according to April.

Instead, she says “we want people that have good time management skills, interpersonal skills, and confidence with clinical assessment skills.”

April is proud of Jobfit’s standing within the industry as a top-tier occupational health service provider.

“Since I’ve been here, we’ve paved the way for new processes that increase efficiency and productivity in our workplace. Our MediManager self-service portal enhances our administration and clinical processes and the client has a better experience as well!” April says.

Safeguarding people’s health and wellbeing is one of the most rewarding aspects of working at Jobfit, says April.

“Outside of our home life, we spend most of our time at work. So, it’s nice knowing that we are contributing to a safe work place for somebody and hopefully lowering the risk of injuries and illness in the workplace.”
