Under the WHS Regulations and Safe Work Australia’s Code of Practice for Managing Noise, baseline audiometric testing is a mandatory component of health monitoring for employees at risk of occupational noise exposure. Health Surveillance audiometry is required for any worker that is required to wear hearing protection while at work or performing their role.
Health Surveillance Audiometry is completed according to the Australian standard: AS NZS 1269.4-2014 Occupational Noise Management – Auditory Assessment.
*Disclaimer: Workers are required to have at least 16 hours of quiet time before the assessment, meaning minimal noise exposure below 85dB for only short periods.
Periodic audiometry must occur at least within 2 years of a baseline health surveillance audiometry test. It should be conducted at least 2 hours into a shift to assess for Occupational Noise-Induced Hearing Loss. Periodic assessments are compared to baseline results for early detection of changes.
A periodic audiometry test should only be booked if a baseline test has been completed under the same employer.
Exit health surveillance audiometry testing is conducted when a worker concludes employment with their employer and was employed in a role involving exposure to hazardous noise. This testing supports compliance with WHS obligations by documenting any potential work-related hearing loss.
